Interview with

Renzo Gracie 2

From SRSDX

No 44, 4/26 , 2001

Translated by Roberto Pedreira

Q: Your previous fight [with Dan Henderson] had a disappointing conclusion. However, what do you think about the new Pride rule [permitting knees while on the ground]?

Renzo: Any rules are ok. I totally don't care what the rules are. Any rules are ok with me.

Q: Well then, don't you think the new rules were the reason for your defeat by Henderson?

Renzo: I don't think the new rules were the reason for my defeat by Henderson. At that time, Henderson won, and I lost. That's all there is to it. The new rules had nothing to do with it.

Q: Hmm. Nothing to do with it......But from next time, to win in Pride, won't you have to devise counter-measures?

Renzo: No. The last thing I'm thinking about is counter-measures. I am going to do only what I have always been doing, without changing. Because like I said, concerning the rules, they weren't a problem. Anyway, I don't think there was any big change in the rules.

Q: Is that so?

Renzo: Yes, it is. We Gracies have been doing these various things for a long time. Jiu-jitsu is the counter-measure against everything. I'm not thinking about revising anything. That would be nonsensical.  We Gracies fight in such events as Pride, to prove that our Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is the strongest. For this reason, we will have to deal with everything that is thrown at us and we intend to show that we can do it.

Q: By the way, Sakuraba who has had a continuous string of victories over the Gracie Family, was this time in Pride completely defeated by Vanderlei Silva. Do you think the new rules had an influence on this result?

Renzo: Hmmm. Maybe. When Silva kicked, Sakuraba was crawling around with his hands out in front of him on the ground. Seeing this scene, I guessed that Sakuraba didn't understand how to use his legs to make "guard". He didn't have a chance to get back up and just like that he got kicked to pieces.

Q: Is that right? Well, there's one last thing I'd like to know. Do you think the new rules are hazardous?

Renzo: Not particularly. I absolutely don't think so. Other fighters say this or that about the new rules being dangerous, but I disagree completely.

Here's another interview with Renzo (before Sakuraba).
